Thoughtful eCommerce Direction

Thoughts on Design, eCommerce, and Life.
by Christopher Galla

Chicago Designer, eCommerce & Creative Director

"If you’re going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It’s the only good fight there is." - Charles Bukowski

FIRST, ABOUT ME
I'm Chris, I run Missing Link, a web & mobile design / ecommerce agency in Chicago's west burbs.I was born roughly 38 years ago. I learned to draw at an early age. My mother encouraged this talent and so I spent the next 20 years doodling and absorbing popular culture. I was into music, my first CD was Nirvana's "Nevermind" (Age 12), although my first cassette tape was Michael Jacksons "Thriller" (Age 5). But I was really interested in everything visual, tv ads, magazine ads, the copy, the models, the photography, the typefaces.

Eventually I had to figure out how to make a living merging my love of art with my interest in culture and visual collateral. I graduated from Illinois State University, and although I knew little of web design, I got my first big corporate job at CDW as web designer, a large B2B eCommerce seller. With no formal experience, or informal experience, I lucked into this job, a guy gave me a break. I didn't know HTML, or CSS, let alone how a massive site with 100,000 products functions. To add to my inexperience, my eCommerce department basically all quit when I started. So I was forced to learn everything really fast. I did well for a couple of years, eventually the VP offered me a raise, I was pretty psyched. Until that raise turned out to be 3.5%. I did my two years there and split.

The Various Places I've Toiled, Earlier in Life.

So more eCommerce jobs with bigger titles came, United Airlines, ULTA CosmeticsProFlowers & Red Envelope. In the big corporate world, your role is sharply defined, your roles and your duties rarely change. So these jobs became tedious, but I was curious, and over time I broadened my experience from just web design, to development, copywriting, web marketing & strategy. When I was 30, a corporate buy-out, and a bevy of talented friends gave me a chance to start my own web design business "Missing Link". So thats was that. I like to think I deliver the big agency experience to small and medium sized businesses across Chicago, at a much lower cost.

The work is ballbreaking and never ends... but the results speak for themselves. Although clients speaking about the results is pretty cool too. I have about 25 clients, and they are all great people, honestly. I've had bad ones (two of them), and I fired them. Life is too short to work with jerks, no matter what they pay you. It's not a noble profession like a doctor or a teacher, but I do help good people succeed. People say "hey you work for yourself, NO BOSS", not really, your boss is the client, you answer to them, you serve them. I'm just happy that I've had enough success to where I'm not forced to work with a-holes, just to make a buck. This is what I'm most proud of. Well, not quite the most...
